According to the police report, the body was found by local residents, and prosecutor Gladys Torales de Ovelar and  the girl’s parents were summoned to the scene. They identified her as María Fernanda Benítez . The remains were charred and covered with weeds.

The girl’s father, Leonardo Benítez, told local media that  Fernanda’s classmates said she was apparently pregnant and that she and her boyfriend went to a  local pharmacy where illegal abortions are performed. “I want justice. It’s confirmed that it’s my daughter’s body; it’s completely burned.  They kidnapped my daughter because she left my house at 10:00 a.m., and by 11:00 a.m. her cell phone was already off.  She was supposedly pregnant, that’s what her friends told me,” said the young woman’s father.

Apparently, the outcome of the abortion wasn’t what they expected, and the young woman felt ill and ended up dying at the home of the teenager’s father. He then took the body to the vacant lot in front of his house, where he tried to hide the tragic incident.  The alleged perpetrator was the victim’s boyfriend and partner, who turned himself in to the police after the gruesome discovery.

The 17-year-old girl  had been missing since May 27 and was last seen leaving her home  that Tuesday morning, intending to go to her friend’s house, although she never arrived. From that moment on, her cell phone had been turned off, further worrying the family.

What does María Fernanda’s autopsy reveal? The forensic doctor’s terrifying account

The forensic doctor of the Public Ministry, Pablo Lemir, provided details of the autopsy performed this Monday on 17-year-old María Fernanda Benítez, found burned to death in a vacant lot in Coronel Oviedo.

First, he noted that they have completed the autopsy in terms of the internal and external inspection of the body.

“Regrettably, I have to tell you that we are leaving the cause of death under investigation,” he clarified.

In this regard, he indicated that some data is still missing, which they will attempt to obtain through laboratory tests in order to more accurately confirm the cause of death.

However, he indicated as his first conclusion that the young woman had blows to the head.

“The young woman suffered two blunt force injuries to her head that likely left her incapacitated, as they were accompanied by cerebral hemorrhage, specifically on the left side of her head,” he explained.

Lemir also stated that there are elements that suggest that María Fernanda died from carbon monoxide poisoning.

The coroner also confirmed that the young woman was 14 to 15 weeks pregnant.

“The fetus was inside the uterine cavity; it was a 14- to 15-week-old male. More than half of the body was charred. The fire was concentrated on the left side of the uterus, and the other half showed signs of putrefaction,” he said.

Did they burn her alive?

Lemir stated that he had inhaled the fire, and “that could have caused poisoning.” The other possibility is that his death could have been “directly caused by the fire.”

“So, since we don’t yet have that result called carboxyhemoglobin, we only have the external characteristics, which are the pink color of the skin,” he noted.

It is presumed that she most likely still had vital signs when she was taken to the vacant lot, where her charred body was found.

“At this point, we can’t conclude. The final decision will depend on the analysis we conduct now,” he emphasized.

Finally, the coroner said that the only visible bruises on her are those on her head.

There is also a fracture in the right arm, and at this time, it is difficult to determine whether that fracture occurred before or after his death.

The suspect’s parents were “not at home”

Prosecutor Gladys Torales stated that the suspect’s parents were not at home when the crime allegedly occurred and claimed to have no knowledge of the crime. Regarding the crime scene, the prosecutor stated that it was at home.

“The parents said they were working, that they weren’t home. They say they didn’t see anything,” he explained, recalling that the teenager was already missing the first time they raided the house.

Torales wrote that the young man’s parents “were very cooperative with the team that conducted the raid.”
