Did you know you can grow a full tomato plant starting with just a simple slice of tomato? It’s true! Follow these easy steps and watch your kitchen scraps turn into a thriving garden.
1. Pick & Prepare Your Tomato Slice
Start with a ripe, juicy tomato and slice it about 1/4 inch (0.5 cm) thick. Choose slices with plenty of visible, healthy seeds—these are your future plants!
2. Lay Your Slice on Moist Soil
Place the tomato slice flat on the surface of loose, well-draining potting soil—either in a pot or your garden bed.
3. Lightly Cover with Soil
Sprinkle a thin layer of potting soil (about 1/2 inch or 1–2 cm) over the slice. This keeps moisture in and lets tiny sprouts break through easily.
4. Water Gently & Keep Moist
Water carefully to keep the soil consistently damp but never soaked—too much water can cause the seeds to rot. Gentle watering triggers germination.
5. Watch for Sprouts (7–14 Days)
In about one to two weeks, you’ll see little green seedlings pushing up through the soil from the buried seeds!
6. Thin Out Seedlings
Once seedlings are 2–3 inches (5–8 cm) tall, remove the weaker ones to give the strongest plants room and resources to thrive.
7. Time to Transplant!
When your healthiest seedlings reach 5–6 inches (12–15 cm) tall, carefully move them into bigger pots or plant them directly in your garden.
8. Support & Care
Give your tomato plants full sun, regular watering, and support with stakes or cages as they grow. Soon, you’ll see flowers—and then delicious tomatoes!
